Curtain Bluff Resort

Curtain Bluff is one of those old time family run Caribbean resorts that’s been around for decades.  The thing we notice is that everyone that goes there loves the place by the time they leave.  What they love is that it’s small, secluded, high end and all inclusive. It has always been and still is great value.  The owners take pride in every detail and are often seen dining among the guests and strolling around the property checking to see that all is in order.

At dinner, women are required to wear skirts or dresses, and men must wear collared shirts, long pants and shoes. The Alain Ducasse-trained French chef prepares culinary masterpieces each night and offers cooking classes regularly. Weekly beachside luncheons featuring a steel drum band allow guests to partake in excellent cuisine on the sand and sample a vintage from the hotel's wine cellar, one of the largest in the Caribbean. Nightly live music entices guests to dance. The beach cafe, with an Italian menu, is now open four nights a week as an alternative dining venue.

Curtain Bluff’s all inclusive plan is exceptional considering the quality of the food. It even includes alcoholic beverages. In addition to the standard meal packages, the hotel includes a wide range of activities in the room rate, including deep-sea fishing, diving and water skiing, as well as basic wedding services and yoga or Pilates sessions. Guests enjoy the luxurious hammocks and facilities such as a well-appointed (and air-conditioned) weight and fitness room, a full-service racquet club with four lighted tennis courts and a squash court, and a dive center. Leisurely kayaking around the bay and snorkeling around Antigua's famous reef are also options.

In this day and age it’s really hard to imagine escaping the world of electronics and perhaps this may be Curtain Bluff’s most luxurious aspect.  The rooms do not have TV’s or computers but guests who come don’t seem to mind. There is a library that has two computers and a TV but more importantly a great selection of books from which you may want to borrow one to read on their comfortable beach chaise lounges in between swims. Cocktails are served on the resort’s wide patio cooled by the sea breeze.

The bluff-top spa houses five treatment rooms, including one just for couples, and features waterfalls, open-air walkways, a relaxation room and an outdoor hot tub. A lovely pool is lined with lounge chairs for more self-guided respite. Hammocks dot the property with perches between two palm trees inviting guests to stop and ponder the views.

With rooms dispersed along the bluff—all with stunning ocean views—the resort has a homey, less-cluttered vibe, with no music blasting from speakers or squealing spring-breakers. Completely demolished in 2005 and rebuilt, the building includes two massive penthouse suites, each with a hot tub and a private deck.

All accommodations boast air-conditioning, fine furnishings of polished wood and tropical wicker, ceiling fans, tiled floors, island artwork, phones, free wireless high-speed Internet access, minibars, safes, and balconies or patios. Deluxe rooms are the most basic and affordable while the Junior Suites are in the majority with sunken living rooms, four-poster beds, and marble or granite baths with Aveda toiletries and hair dryers.

Room service delivers during meal times, and gratuities are usually declined at this high-end hot spot (they show up as an add-on to rates later!). Housekeeping makes twice-daily visits.

Children younger than 8 are not allowed during the month of February, and pets are never allowed. The doors are shuttered in September and October to make annual updates.
