Amangalla
Amangalla derives its name from aman, or "peace" in Sanskrit, and galla, the Sinhalese name for the town of Galle. The resort provides the perfect base for exploring the Fort and the historic town of Galle. It offers a twin experience of the island's southwest coast in conjunction with sister property, Amanwella.
Accommodations: There are four categories of accommodation at Amangalla. Seven bedrooms are located adjacent to Amangalla’s reception, on the ground level of the Middle Street Wing. Six chambers are located within the Church Street Wing and face the Fort ramparts. There are eight Suites, of which six are located in the Church Street Wing and two in the Middle Street Wing. Situated within the resort gardens, the Garden House is a two-story, 140 square metre house featuring a private terrace and balcony offering leafy, treetop views.
Dining: The Zaal – the Great Hall – as it was known in Dutch times. The Zaal is the entry point to the resort and has a wonderful colonial feel with high ceilings, overhead fans and chandeliers. The menu provides light meals and snacks in the morning and afternoon tea is served daily. Adjacent is The Dining Room that provides an intimate setting for dining with a colonial accent. The Dining Room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and provides a choice of traditional Sri Lankan curry and rice and home cooked dishes.
Aman Spa: Amangalla's spa is known as The Baths. They are contained within the lower level of the Middle Street building. Entry is to a reception hall that is flanked on one side by a long ascending arched corridor leading to five treatment rooms. On the other side of the reception hall are the female and male locker rooms and bath areas. Each contains a small number of lockers and a dressing area leading to a hydrotherapy and water massage pool, sauna, steam and cold plunge pool. Adjacent to the Baths and positioned in a quiet part of the hotel gardens is a combined yoga and meditation pavilion. The Pool is centred within the resort’s gardens and measures 21m by 10.5m. Bordering the swimming pool is a terrace containing five shaded cabanas and a series of sun lounges. Poolside service is provided and a variety of light meals and snacks are available.

Weddings at the Amangalla Resort
A wedding in Sri Lanka is an absolute treat for the senses. This enchanted island captivates the heart and is therefore the perfect destination for a romantic, tropical wedding. Amangalla itself is a unique property, the oldest operating hotel in Asia situated at the heart of the historic Dutch Fort of Galle. The hotel exudes old world charm and character, and any wedding held there reflects this.
Amangalla and the Fort can provide an array of wedding venues, depending on the number of guests attending, and the style of service required.
Inside the walls of the Fort is the Anglican church of All Saints, just down the road from Amangalla. A local priest can hold a simple ceremony in this glorious old English church, filled with stained glass windows, ancient wooden pews, pulpits and vaulted ceilings. For a marriage service, both parties must be Anglicans, and recommended by their priest at home. A blessing service is possible for followers of other denominations. A marriage and Catholic mass may be arranged at the spectacular St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, located on a hilltop overlooking the Fort.
It is also possible to arrange a civil ceremony at Amangalla, with the ceremony being conducted by the Fort’s Registrar. For smaller parties, this can be arranged in our Garden Pavilion, a wonderfully peaceful open space with wooden floors, surrounded by lush foliage. For larger parties, the poolside gardens are an ideal location, providing a large and private area surrounded by beautiful trees.
Amangalla can also arrange the perfect convertible vintage cars, classic Indian Ambassadors, decorated tuk tuks, bullock carts or even elephants to carry you and your guests to and from the church and around the Fort. These various modes of transport also provide perfect photo opportunities.
Wedding receptions may be held in the pool courtyard, or in the grand reception hall or ‘Zaal’ and Dining Room.
