The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel

If the island of Manhattan had a royal family, The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel would be its palace. From the very beginning of your stay when the elegant white-gloved elevator operator warmly greets you in The Carlyle’s immaculate lobby, to the moment you realize that even the dogs here are treated to cool bowls of complementary Fiji water, you know that you’re truly in the lap of luxury at The Carlyle.  Located on Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s posh Upper East Side, The Carlyle has been a landmark in terms of both lavishness and Old World elegance since it first opened its ornate doors in 1930.

While The Carlyle’s old world formality and charmingly courteous staff are a welcome throwback to a bygone day; this hotel is also at the cutting edge of modernity, boasting the lush Sense spa, a high tech fitness center, and the sleek Yves Durif salon.  The spa is “an oasis of tranquility that has been designed to convey the sophisticated attitude of New York’s Upper East Side…” amidst the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps, while the salon is home to the “modern mastery of acclaimed hairstylist Yves Durif” in an intimate boutique setting.

The Carlyle is also home to world-class shopping, featuring in-house stores like H.M. Luther Antiques, L’Olivier, Ursus Books and Prints, designer boutique Vera Wang, and jeweler Raymond C. Yard, to name a few.  There are a plethora of top notch stores to keep you inside shopping all day.  While it may be difficult to persuade yourself to leave the hotel’s comfortable parameters, make sure you venture outside the doors to Madison Avenue, one of the world’s premier shopping strips.  Within just a few blocks you will find the flagship stores of illustrious names like Prada, Gucci, Yves St. Laurent, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors.  These are just several of the fashionable designer boutiques that are just steps away from The Carlyle.  In terms of shopping experiences, Midtown Manhattan is a horse of a different color altogether and its just a cab ride away if you’re feeling brave enough for it.

While it is definitely more than deserving of its billing as a hotbed for shopping and fashion, there’s a lot more to this vibrant neighborhood than just that.  While here, you must go for a spring stroll through the beautiful, blooming foliage in the world-famous Central Park;  just a block away.  Urbane travelers can take in a concert or a performance at The Lincoln Center for Performing Arts; home to the likes of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York City Opera, and the New York City Ballet.  (Music fans take note- the bar at the hotel itself also features some pretty talented jazz ensembles on a nightly basis).  While this classy hotel has an art gallery of its very own,  its just one of many in a landscape that includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Frick Collection, and of course the Guggenheim.

Everyone from the Dalai Lama to Johnny Depp has enjoyed the unequalled and unique experience that The Carlyle has to offer, and the sensational staff (who one satisfied guest characterized as seemingly out of an MGM movie from the 1940s and exuding a refined street-savvy) will dote on you in just the same manner as these icons.  The spacious rooms provide wet bars in the foyer, oversized stall showers and state of the art Plastma HDTVs, but what truly makes them stand head and shoulders above the competition is the original artwork, the fully functional fireplaces, and the baby grand pianos.  In addition, the rooms present you with glorious views of Madison Avenue and Central Park, so that you can peacefully observe the comings and goings of Manhattan from your very own haven of serenity (whether this is indoors or from your room’s adjacent patio.) The Carlyle is not only synonymous with luxury and elegance, but also with the refined Upper East Side neighborhood that it is seamlessly woven into.
