Sofitel Amsterdam The Grand
Sofitel Amsterdam The Grand is located between two canals and near the famed red-light district, this hotel was once a royal inn dating to 1578. Now it is an exception hotel with a French flair. Executive Chef Aurelien Poirot is responsible for the French cuisine and fusion dishes. The wine list is extensive and should please even the most discerning. When the weather cooperates, guests take to the verdure of the exquisite courtyard garden.
Guests pass through a dramatic courtyard ringed with an iron fence into the warm marble-floored main hall and on to the elegant reception desk. The lobby boasts a beautiful stairwell with a banister of carved mahogany latticework and a five-story stained-glass window. Antiques and reproduction masterpieces beautify the premises. The decor, rooted in the Golden Age of Dutch trading, shows off exquisite fabrics, fine art and the occasional maritime theme.
Easy chairs in the cocktail lounge encourage slow draughts of drinks, and the leisure center prompts guests into action with its gym, indoor heated pool, whirlpool and solarium, sauna and Turkish bath.
Wonderfully wide hallways lead to air-conditioned accommodations, which beautifully combine contemporary fittings and style with antique touches to match the splendors of the past with the convenience of today. Fabrics are richly woven, and high ceilings are hung with elegant lights. Burled furniture, yards of drapes, good lighting, excellent beds and beautiful combination baths sheathed in marble and handmade tile make for sumptuous surroundings.
Premium rooms include separate walk-in showers and large oval baths. Luxury-branded toiletries and heated floors are thoughtful additions. Minibars, extra linens, plush robes, slippers and big safes are stowed in large closets. Flat-screen TVs, high-speed Internet (wired in all rooms and wireless in some) and several phones round out the appointments. Fax machines are available upon request.
Deluxe rooms are well worth the upgrade from superiors, which are cramped, taking away from the grand experience here. Suites are regal in space, layout and furnishings, with the best views facing the larger canal.
Nice perks include twice-daily maid service, turndown, laundry, a choice of newspapers, and valet and excellent concierge services. Room service works round the clock, and pets are discouraged.
