Kauri Cliffs

Kauri Cliffs is the ideal resort for wine connoisseursgolf enthusiastsnature lovers, and for discerning luxury travelers of all kinds. Rates at Kauri Cliffs include pre-dinner drinks with hors d'oeuvres, a la carte dinner, full breakfast, complimentary mini-bar including domestic beers (excludes liquor and wine) and use of all lodge facilities (excluding golf and spa treatments).

Kauri Cliffs location perched on top of dramatic seaside cliffs overlooking The Bay of Islands could not be more spectacular. The most lovingly taken photographs hardly do justice to the stunning setting of Kauri Cliffs in KerikeriNew Zealand.  This semitropical lodge is surrounded by a dense array of flora, like beautiful phoenix palms, pohutakawa trees, hundreds of ancient kauri trees, and towering ponga ferns that look like they came straight from a science fiction movie.  An old proverb says that Ireland is the land of a thousand shades of green, but Kauri Cliffs is close behind with a few hundred itself.  Quail, pheasants, kingfishers, and even a group of a dozen or so of New Zealand’s famous kiwi birds call this pristine, almost untouched resort setting home.  Whether you’re an Australian looking for a quick weekend getaway that will seem a world apart, or a New Yorker looking for an exotic, faraway travel experience, Kauri Cliffs is the place to go.

The lodge at Kauri Cliffs consists of a mere eight cottages, which are all set at expansive distances apart from one another, making this remote destination the pinnacle of seclusion and privacy.  Not only are these lodges secluded, they’re also awash with luxury.  After the unforgettable views of the emerald waves crashing into the formidable cliffs, the first thing you will notice about the rooms are striking floors are made of rough-split, blond totara logs with pale grouting.  The rooms at Kauri Cliffs also feature high ceilings, open fires, and inviting sofas.  The accommodations at the Kauri Cliffs lodge are a masterfully crafted blend of rustic elegance and classic luxury, and aspiring hoteliers would do well to carefully study their design.

The spacious bedrooms feature king-sized beds with lavish hand-quilted bedding, while the elegant bathrooms feature porcelain bathtubs and separate rain showers.  While each cottage is fabulous, one worth mentioning is the Owner’s Suite at Kauri Cliffs, which sprawls out over 4,200 well-appointed square feet, and features an outdoor Jacuzzi, a glorious infinity pool which seems to drop into the shimmering waters of the bay beyond, a flourishing garden, a well-equipped office, master and guest suite, and even a garage containing a golf cart that will allow you to easily access any point on this extensive 6,000 acre property.  Kauri Cliffs boasts some fantastic amenities, but the owners also realize that a luxury hotel experience isn’t just about lavish furniture and capacious accommodations; sometimes it’s the little touches that make the biggest difference.  The ice buckets are always filled, the impeccable staff is remarkably thoughtful and attentive to your every need, and they anticipate what you want before you even have to ask for it.  Touches like this elevate Kauri Cliffs from a great luxury resort to an incredible one.

After you’re done taking in the seaside vistas and reveling in the tasteful rustic grandeur of the guest cottages, you’ll want to experience all that Kauri Cliffs has to offer.  In terms of dining, Kauri Cliffs is a gourmet experience that will excite even the most refined palette.  New-Zealand born head chef Paul Jobin concocts Asian-inspired dishes like squid tempura, seven-spice peppered beef, and black lacquer duck leg on scallion pancake with banana lime relish and chili jam in an elegant setting where the required formal wear matches the opulence of the cuisine.  Other scintillating items typical of the standout menu include seared scallops with mango, organic filet mignon, crushed potato and avocado with zucchini and chili jam, and coconut salad with Malay-style lemongrass sauce.

After checking out your accommodations and enjoying a feast at the dining room, venture outside to take advantage of the wine country, world-class golf, tranquil spa, and glorious natural surrounding that Kauri Cliffs offers its guests.  Nearby, there are two immaculate white sand beaches, as well as a pristine pink sand beach that looks like it could be straight out of Bermuda.

The spa at Kauri Cliffs really accentuates the relaxing qualities of the surrounding totara forests and verdant glens that the area is known for.  Here, guests can enjoy decadent treatments either fireside or al fresco in a lush garden.  The spa offers a number of indulgent treatments, like the Shell and Ocean Therapy Massage, in which seashells, sea essences, and mineral-rich sea salts are incorporated into a deep tissue massage to augment its healing and detoxifying properties.  Then there’s the Jade and Crystal Essence Massage, in which New Zealand jade and bloodstone crystals are incorporated into your Swedish massage to balance your body.  We also highly recommend the Waterfall Massage, which starts with an invigorating body rub made from refined sea salts and essential oils, before you lie back and relax under eight individually controlled water jets that work in unison with a massage specialist to relieve stress and reduce tension.  Another treatment at Kauri Cliff's that you won’t want to miss is the Rescue Wrap, in which you will be rejuvenated by an exfoliation under a warm waterfall shower.  A thick soft cream mask than cocoons your body, which creates a divine sensation while releasing soothing, calming, and moisturizing properties that rescue your skin and relax your mind.

Golfers will savor the chance to play at the Kauri Cliffs golf course, a true gem that wraps and winds itself around the cliffs, with fifteen of the eighteen holes overlooking the Pacific Ocean below.  The holes that don’t overlook the mighty Pacific aren’t just an afterthought; however, they go through dense marshes, towering forests, and rolling farmlands that give this course a truly versatile setting.  The breathtaking vistas may distract you from getting your shot on the green, but than, the score isn’t always what’s important here, it’s secondary to the unforgettable experience.  James A. Frank of Golf Connoisseur magazine confirms the course’s majesty, writing that “Many have compared it to Pebble Beach, but the setting is even more spectacular, high on the bluffs.  And there is not another speck of development in sight- just miles of trees, farmland, and water.”  And don’t worry about crowded links, it’s a busy day if there are more than 20 golfers at Kauri Cliffs.   You can warm up for the course at the world-class practice facility, which includes a driving range, putting and chipping greens, and a well-stocked pro shop.  In 2001, Golf Digest named this the Best New International Golf Course in the world, and once you tee off, you’ll fully understand why.

With a lavish spa, world-class golf, a bevy of enthralling wine tours, beautiful natural surroundings, and accommodations that are second to none, Kauri Cliffs is New Zealand’s ultimate luxury travel experience.
