Kivotos
Kivotos is one of the best hotels on Mykonos. Opened in 1993, the hotel blends the sugar-cube architecture of the old town with unexpected touches of sophistication.
The serene yet trendy look is the work of a sure hand abetted with a trove of objets d'art. Modern art and witty frescoes contrast with classic columns, and antiques and modern furniture blend smartly.
A dark paneled desk adds more contrast in the white marble reception area brightened by a clever Murano chandelier with colorful mismatched arms. The adjacent lounge, decorated with antiques, provides a gracious setting for tea. Most appealing, however, is the sun-filled, beautifully appointed salon overlooking Ornos Bay, where arriving guests are greeted with soft music and a glass of champagne.
Breakfast and dinner are served at the well-regarded La Meduse restaurant above the lobby amid lovely antiques, elegant table settings, and bay views framed by small windows. The French-Italian gourmet cuisine is also served on the restaurant's terrace with its hard-to-beat view.
Guests can enjoy lunch by the wonderful seawater pool set in a courtyard with stone arches, wooden lounge chairs and a fountain. Drinks are served at the pool's swim-up bar as well as indoors in the caviar and cigar bar with prime treats from Iran and Cuba.
A secluded outdoor whirlpool is hidden among the landscaped gardens and a second freshwater pool caters to those who prefer quieter surroundings. Kivotos' small spa offers treatments based on St. Barth products, a selection of massages and body treatments ranging from Thai and Swedish massages to Reiki and is complemented by a gym, a sauna, a full-size squash court and a playroom with billiards.
The small private beach offers watersports, while the boutique and antiques shop keeps credit cards racing toward their limits. Weddings can be held at the hotel's small chapel. Use of the Internet room and parking is free, as is the shuttle to the airport and port.
Guest rooms are as tastefully decorated as the public areas, with beam ceilings, wood trim, fine linens, fresh flowers, baths with wooden-legged sinks and balconies. Air-conditioning, phones with data ports, TVs, minibars, safes and hair dryers are also standard. The 15 suites provide equally inviting decor in more generously proportioned surroundings, with separate living rooms and DVD and CD players. Three have private pools.
The small Typical rooms should be avoided, except for solo travelers. Instead, couples should opt for the spacious Deluxe Superior or even the VIP Suite. The latter has a romantic four-poster bed, a private pool and many thoughtful extras such as a cordless phone and a TV set right above the tub. Kivotos' grandest accommodation, the three-bedroom VIP Villa with private pool and beach, was still under construction at inspection. All rooms get twice-daily housekeeping, nightly turndown, and fresh fruit and flowers upon arrival.
