InterContinental Paris Le Grand
The InterContinental Paris Le Grand covers the larger part of an oversized ninth arrondissement block and projects an immense 1862 facade toward the Opera Garnier. The hotel's landmark Cafe de la Paix has epitomized romantic Paris for generations and still remains crowded on the outside. The interior is an elegant brasserie with gold-leaf columns and frescoes that serves all meals from baguette sandwiches to elaborate hot entrees. Three meals a day is the norm, and a breakfast spread is typically French in nature with American classics to appeal to the appetites of largely North American guests.
The lobby, larger than many hotel lounges, reclaims its classic grandeur with a sweeping reception-concierge counter. The open, black- and gold-trimmed staircase winds upward. The lounge, graced by a grand piano, lies under an atrium ceiling and immense chandelier and potted trees. Plenty of seating is available in the immense lobby lounge area rendering more of an American look compared to the more intimate lounges of its competitors. The bar-lounge houses a counter with copious bottles, and area tourists love to rest their weary legs and shopping bag-laden arms here. The tranquil winter garden wraps guests in natural light, and a lobby cafe serves breakfast and lunch.
The modern, mosaic-tiled spa offers a wide range of treatments with a marine-inspired twist. Facials, scrubs, massages and wraps are among the options, along with the use of aromatherapy, herbal tea and music to enhance spa treatments. The juice bar keeps guests hydrated between treatments. Those who relax by working up a sweat can take to the fitness center's cardio equipment anytime day or night. A sauna warms muscles, and a multisensory shower rounds out the wellness roster. Robes and slippers are provided.
Wide hallways with sconces go past sprawling elevator lounges. The undersized classic and superior rooms are small so we recommend the deluxe and executive rooms which are of adequate dimensions. Styling is directoire, and colors are red, rust and brown. Swags drape the wide windows handsomely. Raised beds with plush linen-lined mattresses and topped with throws invite guests to enjoy the luxury. The rich use of colors and fabric makes even the small roms elegant and appealing, and mahogany furnishings add to the warmth.
Baths run from small to medium and are done in beige marble; many feature plenty of natural light thanks to their unique windows. All have robes, slippers, deluxe toiletries and hair dryers, and some have separate showers.
Rooms have three forms of Internet connections, including high-speed, plus minibars and safes. Five presidential suites are in the corners facing the opera. Some rooms feature small balconies.
Junior Suites have been divided into two categories: those with and those without opera views. Request preferences in advance. The new Luxury Suite category includes former fifth-floor Prestige Suites with opera views. Guests on the club floor have upgraded amenities and facilities, including DVD players, a private meeting venue, sitting room and dining space, and access to a two-level lounge with numerous food presentations.
Service is highly professional and super-friendly. Two floors are smoke-free, and handicapped rooms are available. Room service operates at all hours, and pets are not permitted.
