Il Pellicano
One of famed chef Mario Batali's favorite hotels is located an hour and 45 minutes drive northwest of Rome. Secluded and exclusive sums up this refuge with the distinguished kitchen as it’s formidable heart if not easily one of it’s main attractions. Those who come here tend to put down roots for the duration of their stay, and the half-board rates are actually quite reasonable. Dining, after all, is one of this hotel's highlights. The rustic-modern styling in this red-stucco, ivy-strewn enclave is casual and because of its proximity to the eternal city a favorite with chic Romans.
The lounge invites relaxation in deep plush seating, and the small piano bar is divided from the lobby by a two-sided fireplace. This is a popular evening hangout, except in summer, when gala poolside dinner-dances are a Friday tradition. The glass-enclosed Pelican Point offers distinguished regional food in tandem with blue-water views, and guests can choose from a wine list representing 15,000 bottles kept on the premises. The bar and grill offer sea views from two pine-shaded terraces.
The heated saltwater pool sparkles in a panoramic flagstone deck. Just beyond, a stone pathway wends down the cliff to the artificial beach; it is actually a creatively fashioned cement jetty furnished with ample chaise lounges and umbrellas. Guests step down the ladders for a swim in the placid, clear Mediterranean water. The restaurant's prominent chef oversees a growing number of cooking classes, which are a big draw in the low season.
Individually decorated with regional touches, the sophisticated accommodations are detailed with coffered ceilings, Oriental rugs on terra-cotta tile and hand-painted headboards. Club chairs and desks add urbanity, and arched doors open to terraces. Many rooms have balconies or panoramic terraces, and 6, 7, 15 and 20 are outstanding choices. The suites and studios are in small cottages near the main house.
The staff is gracious, the atmosphere is refined and relaxing, and the charming owners' hospitality is notable. The hotel operates from April to October.
