Hotel Continental
Hotel Continental is in the heart of Oslo – Norway’s capital and largest city, with a population of 593,000. Oslo has been the official capital of Norway since the country first got its own constitution in 1814. The Parliament, called the Storting, the government quarter and the Royal Palace are all within short walking distance of Hotel Continental.
Oslo has a unique location, nestled between the fjord with its beaches and boats and the forest-clad hills, and thus enjoys the best of both worlds. The city has many parks and green spaces, as well as a network of prepared cross-country skiing tracks and eight downhill slopes within the city limits.
The History of Oslo Oslo can trace its history back some 1,000 years. The city has changed beyond recognition since mediaeval times, and has even been renamed a few times.
Originally called Oslo, in the Middle Ages the city was situated on the eastern shore of Bjørvika Bay. After a massive fire razed it to the ground in 1624, King Christian IV decided to rebuild the city in the area behind Akershus fortress – and to rename it Christiania after himself. In 1877, the spelling of the name was changed to the more Norwegian-looking Kristiania, and in 1925, the city was rechristened Oslo. The city has played an important role for more than 1000 years.
