The Grand- Stockholm, Sweden

The name says it all- The Grand Hotel Stockholm is indeed the premier hotel in Sweden’s capital, and one of the finest in northern Europe.  Whether you’re dining at the Michelin-rated restaurant, relaxing in your private sauna, or enjoying the sweeping views of Stockholm from your own balcony, you will experience the epitome of Scandinavian luxury at The Grand Hotel Stockholm.

The Flag Suite sits at the top of The Grand Hotel Stockholm, and provides access via a spiral staircase to a turret on the hotel’s roof, providing spectacular views of the city.  This turret is the highest point of the hotel and has room for two people.  The master bathroom features a small steam room, and a Jacuzzi with a glass cupola above it to let in natural light.  Also of note is The Noble Suite, which is decorated in a modern style but with many antique details.  The walls are adorned with paintings of Alfred Noble and his family, a copy of his will, and pictures of all of the Noble Laureates since 1997.  The bathroom features a steam room and a Jacuzzi.

The crown jewel of accommodations at The Grand Hotel is The Princess Lillian Suite, perhaps the finest room in Stockholm.  The suite contains two bedrooms, one in an Oriental color scheme, the other in Scandinavian blue with nuances of gray.  The suite contains a private cinema, with wood paneling for optimal acoustics, that can seat up to twelve people.  The library features all of the office amenities a guest could need, and opens up to a spacious living room comprised of comfortable lounge furniture, a grand piano, a dining area, and a private bar.  Another great feature of The Princess Lillian Suite is the relaxation area, which contains a mosaic bath where the water flows freely onto a granite base.  There are massage showers, a waterfall, and wicker chairs to unwind on.  A specially designed private sauna offers light, sound, and aroma therapy.  Two distinct balconies offer unparalleled views of the Royal Palace, the water, and all corners of Stockholm.  Guests staying in The Princess Lillian Suite will be picked up at the airport by limousine on arrival, and dropped off by limousine upon departure.  They will have the privilege of access to this limousine throughout their stay.

The Grand Hotel Stockholm’s highly acclaimed Restaurant Mathias Dahlgren has barely been open for two years, but in an unprecedented rise to the top, it has already garnered two prestigious Michelin Stars and staked its place on San Pellegrino’s list of the 50 Best Restaurants in The World.  Restaurant Matthias Dahlgren is comprised of two different dining experiences which complement each other through the dual concepts of ‘Matsalen’ (the dining room) and ‘Matbaren’ (the food bar).  The ever-evolving menu is changed and presented on a daily basis, offering guests only the freshest and best local and global ingredients and products every day.  Head chef Mathias Dahlgren is well known in Sweden, and is the only Swedish chef to win the prestigious ‘Bocuse d’Or’ contest.  In terms of décor, the New York Times has written that Restaurant Mathias Dahlgren has “raised the bar in a city with no shortage of beautiful dining rooms.”  Velvet sofas elevate from the parquet floors, while a Carlo Scarpa chandelier and a classic, brass Swedish kitchen lamp hang from the ceiling, illuminating the room.  The wine list consists of a wide array of carefully selected wines from producers and vineyards all over Europe and the world.  Since the Restaurant Mathias Dahlgren serves wine by the glass, you can easily enjoy and try several interesting new wines and discover unexpected taste combinations with the gourmet dishes that they complement.

Meanwhile, The Grand Hotel Stockholm’s restaurant Veranda boasts wonderful views of the harbor, Old Town, and the Royal Palace, while serving up traditional Swedish fare in a contemporary fashion.  It is a popular meeting place where hotel guests, tourists, and Stockholmers come to dine and to socialize.  Here, you can indulge in the celebrated Swedish tradition of the ‘smorgasbord’, or enjoy the ever-changing themed menus, which could be anything from ‘shellfish week’ to the ‘Christmas buffet’ depending on what time of year you visit.

Ideally situated in the heart of Stockholm, The Grand Hotel is within walking distance of world-class shopping and museums, and the boat that takes off to transport passengers to the surrounding archipelago takes off from a quay directly in front of the hotel.  The National Museum, one of the best art museums in Europe, is right down the block, while The historic Royal Palace is also within walking distance.  Exhibits from all over Sweden can be found at Skansen, the world’s first open-air museum, which was created to be a microcosm of the nation itself.  Also of note is The Skansen Aquarium.  For an in-depth guide of what to see and do while in Stockholm, take a look at Classic Travel’s Stockholm Destination Guide!
