Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac
The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac is the icon of Quebec City much like the Empire State Building and Eiffel tower are in New York and Paris. The massive 19th-century building, in the style of a Renaissance chateau, is so popular with the streams of tourists for whom this hotel is an obligatory walk-through that it must keep its public baths reserved for those with room keys.
The building's regal exterior is the most recognizable and popular attraction but the regal lobby with coffered ceilings, tapestries, chandeliers and fireplaces, is also exceptionally beautiful.
Guests dine and drink in the elegant Le Champlain restaurant, where reservations should be made well in advance. Those in search of less formal surroundings and food can take the spiral staircase down to a less formal room overlooking the river promenade, where bountiful buffets are laid out at Cafe de la Terrasse.
A snack bar and bistro satisfies lighter appetites, and Le St. Laurent Bar and Lounge provides the perfect repose for single-malt Scotch and Cuban cigars. Wonderful aromas lure passersby to the Beaver Tail pastry shop.
A fitness center on the sixth floor comprises an indoor pool that is wheelchair accessible, whirlpool, wading pool, steam rooms and gym. A mini-spa offers massages and a few treatment options. Tennis, golf, skiing, riding and rafting can be arranged in the area.
Guest rooms differ markedly according to location, but most were renovated in the spring of 2008 and display French-provincial styling. These have chandeliers, murals, 37-inch flat-screen LCD TVs atop old-fashioned dressers and plush soft goods.
The standard rooms have not been upgraded and are very small, almost closet sized, but do offer individually climate controlled air-conditioning, voice mail, high-speed Internet (for a fee), minibars and tea/coffeemakers.
The Fairmont rooms are larger and face the inner courtyard. Deluxe Old Quebec rooms are the same size but look out toward the city. Top-dollar Deluxe River View rooms are larger still and the only ones to offer views of the river.
Signature rooms present a choice of a spectacular view of the old town or the most enviable perch over the mighty St. Lawrence River.
As with all Fairmont properties, Fairmont Gold level accommodations are also offered as "a hotel within a hotel," highlighted by exclusive check-in areas, delegated elevators, and exceptional amenities and services from a dedicated staff.
These also feature a complimentary breakfast, numerous daily food presentations and fine baths with hair dryers, marble tubs and vanity areas.
Room service runs morning to midnight.
After exploring the history and living the present in Quebec City, retire to the luxorious accomodations at The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, the best hotel in Quebec City.
