Egerton House Located in a residential neighborhood off Brompton Road, midway between Harrods and the Victoria & Albert Museum, this stands as one of the most evocative contemporary boutique-hotels of its kind. Providing its guests with an English atmosphere, this superlative small hotel offers what many in its class are in short supply of, standout service.
The staff here is a handpicked team of affable professionals who go out of their way to meet the needs of guests without being pushy or patronizing. The hands-on general manager and South African owner deserve praise their insightful handling of the reins.
The fact that this small boutique hotel was accepted is a member of the prestigious Virtuoso group puts it in class in some ways with much larger luxury properties such as the Dorchester and the Ritz. The lovely redbrick and whitewashed town house steps up to a small but warmly furnished reception area manned by smiling, knowledgeable staffers.
Seating is limited, but guests looking for comfort head into the adjacent lounge and newly refurbished bar. The notable white-jacketed tender rivals the Milestone Hotel's own famed bartender. Views of the treed neighborhood are visible from lounge's plump armchairs and sofas, and a formidable tea is delivered here each afternoon. Hearty Continental and cooked-to-order breakfasts are served in a Lilliputian restaurant, set in the daylight basement. Done in soothing cloud tones of white and silvery gray, it offers a new menu at lunch and dinner, and a 24-hour room-service menu is also available.
The individually decorated rooms vary in size from small to spacious, but thoughtful design grows the proportions of even the minutest quarters. The rooms display an engaging, eclectic blend of antique, country and contemporary accents, custom furnishings, thick carpeting and graphic art. The top-notch accoutrements include thermostats with brisk air-conditioning, dual-line phones with data ports and voice mail, new flat-screen TVs with comprehensive entertainment centers (music, video games, videos and movies), minibars, safes and bedside controls. The preloaded Bose mp3-capable stereos are fabulous perks that are also loaded with a slew of walking tours that cover a long list of historic landmarks and sights of interest, enough for a week's stay.
Baths are flawlessly finished in marble and handmade tile and all have power showers. Singles, with double beds, are larger than most, and doubles add a bit more space than singles and offer more seating. One of the best choices is 3, a lovely and spacious queen-bedded room on the ground floor, though any of the deluxe rooms will please even the most demanding travelers.
