Crosby Street Hotel
The Crosby Street Hotel is located in the heart of the Soho area in downtown Manhattan. It’s the first hotel in the United States for British hoteliers Kit and Tim Kemp. Their collection of boutique hotels in London have earned a reputation for superb service from a staff that goes the extra step to make their guests feel at home. Let’s hope they can accomplish the same in New York. One thing they have accomplished is the feat of building a new hotel that is beautiful and “Green” efficient. The stunning hotel was built using regional or recycled materials, controlled green power and intelligent use of water reduction. Its called LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
The facade is of brick, stone and glass with floor-to-ceiling warehouse windows. There are 88 rooms and suites spread over eleven floors. The striking centerpiece in the lobby is a large Jaume Plensa steel sculpture of a human head created from letters of the alphabet.
There is no shortage of restaurants in this area (French style bistro Balthazar is a half block away) but Crosby Street Hotel is betting that their guests will want to have some of their meals in house. The Crosby Bar offers food and drinks throughout the day, and seasonal produce such as strawberries, tomatoes and lettuces are grown in the rooftop kitchen garden, which also has a chicken coop. A patio allows for outdoor dining. Guests who wish to connect with their "inner Brit" can enjoy afternoon tea, and those who prefer a "New York moment" can head out to the sculpture garden and select from the cocktail menu.
Descending the oak stairs from the lobby leads into an area for private events. A boldly colored open reception area with bright Peter Rocklin paintings leads into three interconnecting private dining and meeting rooms. The Crosby Street Hotel Screening Room, a private cinema, is a stunning space with 99 orange leather Poltrona Frau chairs and walls padded in violet wool.
The guest rooms and suites, many with open views of downtown Manhattan, come with flat-screen LCD TVs, DVD and CD players, iPod docking stations, Wi-Fi, fully stocked minibars and personal safes. Baths are executed in light gray granite, oak and glass, and are outfitted with rain showers—some also feature oversized tubs. The bath products have been created by Miller Harris exclusively for the hotel.
It is the guest room windows that set this hotel apart from others in the city. They are all ceiling to floor warehouse type windows that unlike most warehouse windows are double paned. Even the minimum room category has an open feel, great light and is quiet. High ceilings create a feel of extra space as well. Dare we say this is a New Yorkers idea of true “”luxury”.
More than 50 native flowering plants have been planted on the terrace of Room 203, called "The Meadow Suite." Though accessible only to those who book the suite, the meadow provides all guests a soothing view. The flowering plants will blossom in stages throughout the seasons, creating a colorful and vibrant green space.
Crosby Street Hotel is a welcome addition to the New York hotel scene and we predict those that usually stay “uptown” when visiting may soon be opting to try a little bit of Brit Chic “downtown”.
