Conrad Hotel New York Downtown
Conrad Hotel, which is the luxury brand of Hilton, has opened their first hotel in New York City. The hotel is located in Battery Park two blocks from Ground Zero and one block from the Hudson River. This is a great location for anyone who is working downtown. However it’s also a great location for the leisure traveler who doesn’t want to spend the uptown prices and be close to the Tribeca area. It’s especially worth considering in the summer months because Battery, where the hotel is located, is one of Manhattan’s best kept secrets. When it’s roasting hot uptown this area affords ocean breezes and great views like the Statue of Liberty.
The hotel is built around a 15-story atrium, a throwback design from 1980’s that has been given an artistic update. Huge angular white tubes dangle from the skylight, and a dramatically illuminated blue and purple mural stretches 13 stories high. The floor of the atrium is taken up by futuristic contoured slipper chairs and sofas illuminated from below, as if resting on halos of light.
Off the atrium is Restaurant Atrio, a modern Mediterranean restaurant in a bright space of multi-angled walls and ceiling, sleek wood paneling, and white leather seating.
The seasonal rooftop bar (open May-October) should be added to the roster of New York City's cool rooftop scenes despite its name—the Loopy Doopy Bar. The sunsets are the best! Directly above the bar is a green roof, including an edible garden producing herbs and produce, all part of the hotel's pursuit of Gold LEED certification.
The 24-hour fitness center on the lobby level is filled with new LifeFitness equipment.
The standard accommodations are 430 square feet. All have separate bedrooms and living areas fitted with sofa beds. Entrance off the atrium is through the living area, while the bedroom is in back, enjoying views through big windows. Frosted glass panels provide privacy. The living rooms have Noguchi-like coffee tables, original art, and light wood desks and paneling. In the bedrooms, the beds with adjustable reading lights face paneled walls with recessed niches for the 42-inch TVs.
All suites come with Wi-Fi (for a fee), two flat-screen TVs, espresso machines, minibars, wet bars, and central controls to adjust the lighting, temperature and drapes. Baths dressed up with deep rectangular basins, light wood vanities and illuminated mirrors are mostly shower-only models, unless you pay up for the Luxury Suites, which come with soaking tubs.
The best views here face the river, with distant views of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Superior suites are the same size as deluxe suites but on higher floors for far-reaching views. The Premier suites are almost twice as large and have big living rooms with section seating, huge baths, walk-in closets and iPads.
Room service runs 24 hours, and pets are allowed.
If this hotel were situated in Midtown, its rates would be much higher. As this revitalized area gains in popularity, rates can be expected to escalate. For now, it's a really great value and especially for families.
