Adlon Kempinski
The Adlon Kempinski is hands down Berlin’s most notable luxury hotel. A five-minute walk from the Reichstag, this hotel is the reincarnation of the original Adlon, Weimar Germany's most famous rendezvous, which burned down in 1945. Situated adjacent to the British and French embassies, this seven-story hotel is one of the key symbols of Germany's reunification.
The centerpiece of the Adlon is the winter garden, a leafy oasis in a two-story atrium full of potted palms, a trickling fountain and wicker armchairs. Another winter-garden-style atrium lies farther in and is used as banquet space for functions. The lobby bar with its coffered ceiling and art-deco overtones is a well known spot for Berliner’s and for that matter anyone else of importance who happens to be in town.
The elegant Restaurant Quarre awes with its regional fare, sunset views, and Brandenburg Gate backdrop. Its world-renowned asparagus season dishes are not to be missed. But for the gourmet, the Michelin-star-awarded Restaurant Lorenz Adlon—where guests enjoy French Haute Cuisine with cityscape scenes—is an absolute must. To add a little fun to the food, celebrity Chef Thomas Neeser offers seasonal "Becoming a Chef" cooking classes.
The cafe on the corner of Pariser Platz takes care of the many tourists who transit the area daily. Evening entertainment is subdued, with just a piano in the lounge. A Teutonic stube supplies guests with a regional slice of life, but its rusticity is as elegant and calculated as the rest of the hotel.
Recreational facilities include an indoor pool (another bar adjoins it), a whirlpool, sauna, steam bath, solarium and gym. The new Adlon Day Spa increases this property's relaxation offerings in an oasis of peace. Here, an entire range of massages and treatments is available.
The thoughtfully maintained, oversized accommodations are a composite of contemporary furnishings and detailing in marble, sandstone and stained glass. Cherry paneling and damask drapes add contrast to the light modern decor, and TVs (flat-screen in some rooms), CD players, fax machines, wireless high-speed Internet access and data ports are standard. Portable phones allow guests to receive calls anywhere in the hotel. The baths have double vanities, stall showers and WCs.
Deluxe rooms overlook Unter den Linden. Business rooms, facing Behrenstasse, provide the largest workspace and kitchenettes. Superior units face the inner courtyard or Wilhelmstrasse from upper floors, and the least expensive rooms fill the lower floors and are more exposed to street noise. A new wing of guest rooms has added more deluxe accommodations to this city hallmark.
Room service operates at all hours, delivering anything that a guest requests. Smoke-free rooms are in the mix. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are available, as is laundry service. Security is provided via key cards, surveillance cameras and ample staff presence.
Since the opening of the nearby Reichstag, the Adlon has become Berlin's top hotel for politicians and diplomats en masse.
