Hotel Punta Tragara, Capri
We like to think we know Capri and we certainly know the Punta Tragara. We even know which rooms have the best views at this luxury hotel that’s located in the most exclusive area of Capri at the end of the scenic Via Tragara. The "Punta" as it is referred to affectionately by locals, returning guests and those in the know is the only hotel that directly overlooks the famed Faraglioni Rocks. You've undoubtingly seen images in numerous travel publiciations!
As there are no cars on this part of the island, getting to the Hotel Punta Tragara Capri affords the visitor one of the island's prettiest walks as the Via Tragara is perhaps the most elegant of the islands many foot paths. Beautiful vegetation is only interrupted by spectacular views. The views are not only of the Mediterranean Sea but also of Capri's dramatic coastline and Ana Capri.
Looking downward from the Punta Tragara to the bay does not get more glamourous as this is where some of the biggest yachts in the world anchor for a day or more as they cruise the Mediteranean. It takes 15 minutes to walk to town as there are no cars and the same to walk to the world famous "Fontelina" beach club which lies directly below the Punta Tragara. The Fontelina Beach Club restaurant is only open for lunch and is considered one of Capri's best.
The hotel has two swimming pools. The larger of the two is tucked into the mountain where spectacular views can be be enjoyed as you swim. The surrounding vegetation is mature pine trees and some of the largest cacti plants seen anywhere. All of this is complimented by beautiful red geraniums and other flowers. Certainly this is the most unusual if not most beautiful pool setting in Capri. The smaller pool has a whirlpool and also in a special garden setting though not as dramatic as the larger one.
While Punta Tragara is a boutique hotel with only 44 rooms and suites, there is no lack of areas where one can dine. The main dining room, Monzu, is where breakfast is served. Breakfast is always included in the rates and this is one very typical of Italy. Wonderful freshly baked pastries are accompanied by whatever fresh fruit is in season. Peaches are like the ones you remember growing up, not like so many of the mass produced ones today that smell good but have no taste. Naturally there are different types of meat and cheese offered. Eggs are cooked to order.
Lunch at the Punta Tragara is served here also but more often in two other venues. One is by the smaller pool under a grapevine covered trellis. The waiter will take your order while you are sunning and then come for you when lunch is served. The setting is not only beautiful but amazingly quiet with only the sounds of birds chirping around you. The other popular venue is in front of but below the main pool. Here are 5 or 6 tables with umbrellas overlooking the Via Tragara below and the sea beyond. Lunches are simply but beautifully prepared and with the freshest of ingredients. Try the pasta anytime and, of course, the amazing arugula that is easily the best in the world.
Dinner at the Punta Tragara is served on the same terrace and also in the main dining room. Everything is cooked to order so don’t expect a quick dinner. After all, cocktails and dinner is the main event of the day and taken seriously by the staff who are happy to discuss every detail of the menu including the various cuts of meat and how the chef will prepare them that evening. The mood here is also low key but romantic as well. Be sure to discuss the wine menu as some of Italy’s best wines can be found on it and probably some that are never shipped out of the country.
The hotel’s small but adequate gym has ceiling to floor glass and is 10 feet above and looks over the Via Tragara. Free weights are accompanied by the usual machines. It has its own terrace where one can sit and gaze at the scenery in between reps. It is never crowded. A completely new SPA “UNICA” offers intense and high performance treatments using the most advanced sea salt and algae products for effettivre massages and wellness packages,
Now that the Punta Tragara has updated many of their suites (and they are beautiful) there is no doubt it will be the toughest ticket in town for the chic traveler to get accommodations at. All of the suites have terraces with drop dead views. Of all the hotels in Capri, it is the Punta Tragara that most exemplifies a feeling of understated elegance and is meant for the traveler who does not want to "see or be seen".
Be sure to check out our Capri Guide as well.
The only way to get to the Punta Tragara is to walk as there are no cars on this part of the island.
From the main square or the “Piazzetta”, as it is referred to, you will walk towards the Grand Hotel Quisisana. If your standing in the square face the steps that go up to the church take the path or walkway on your left and walk to your right. You will be walking down an inclined cobbled street while passing various shops. You’ll pass the Hotel La Palma on your left. Very shortly you will see the Quisisana (Also, you can ask anyone of the shop keepers as everyone knows where this hotel is).
When you are in front of and facing the Quisisana turn left. You will be on the Via Camerelle. Follow that to the end (You will pass more shops and Faraglioni restaurant on your left.) There is a small fork where you can turn left or go slightly right. You want to turn left onto the Via Tragara (If you turn to the right you will be on the Via Occhio Marino and this is wrong) Follow the Via Tragara to the end. You will pass Casa Morgano and Scalinatella hotels which will be on your right. The Punta Tragara is all the way at the end of the path on your left. Just before you will pass the Brunella Restaurant and Hotel on your right. The walk is beautiful and is about 15 minutes from the Piazzetta.
